Gala Day during Kington Festival
The Kington Lions members run a Barbecue, Tea & Coffees, Cakes, and a Duck Race during the Gala Day of
Kington Festival.
Approximately ten Lions members give their time to cater for this event, and using best-quality local produce cater to the needs of the people of Kington as they enjoy the Gala Day entertainment.
The Barbecue offers Bacon rolls, best Beefburgers and Sausages from Glyn Slade-Jones, and soft drinks. The ever-popular Teas & Coffees Stall also offers cakes, strawberries and cream, and a welcome opportunity for a sit-down during the afternoon.
The Duck Race has become a regular feature of Lions' fund raising in recent years. Some 1,000 ducks are 'sold' in the weeks leading up to Gala Day, and on the day they are released into the Arrow River on the Recreation Ground. The 'owner' of the winning duck earns a substantial cash prize, as do the owners of second- and third-placed ducks.
Gala Day takes place on the last Saturday of the Festival calendar - this year on 19th June 2010. It begins with with the traditional carnival parade starting at 1.30pm. The dressed floats and fancy dress participants are all judged for prizes and trophies by a team of judges. The carnival procession will proceed through the town to the Kington Recreation Ground where an afternoon of fun and games awaits the expectant visitor. There is no charge for entry onto the Recreation Ground, where a range of exciting attractions such as funfare, stalls, refreshments and licenced bar are provided.
